How to solve algebraic expressions addition and subtraction? | TIRLA ACADEMY

As you know maths is a vast subject we learn about various shapes, equations, formulas, numbers, etc.

In this article, we are going to discuss algebraic expressions and how to solve algebraic expressions for addition and subtraction?

Let's start with the definition of algebraic expression.

What is Algebraic Expression?

An algebraic expression is an expression that contains the variables, coefficients, and constant terms. Here are some examples of algebraic expressions:

2x+5y+7
Here,
x and y are variables, 2 and 5 are coefficients, and 7 is a constant term.

9t-6-8s
Here,
t and s are variables, 9 and -8 are coefficients, and -6 is the constant term.

How to solve algebraic expressions?

To solve the algebraic expressions we will separate the like and unlike terms and simplify them as the operations addition(+) or subtraction(-).

How to do the addition of algebraic expressions?

To add the algebraic expressions we will write like terms one below the other and separate the unlike terms.

Let's take some examples to understand it-
1. Add 3y-4z+9 and 8z-8y-2
Solve:
 3y-4z+9
-8y+8z-2
 -----------
-5y+4z+7

2. Add 7p+88q-5r+23 and 6q-6z+88r
Solve:
7p+88q-5r +23
       6q+88r     -6z
----------------------
7p+94q+83r+23-6z

How does the subtraction of algebraic expression?

To subtract the algebraic expression first we write the like terms one below the other and separate the unlike terms if any. Now change the sign of the below row and simplify them as operations.

Let's take some examples for better understanding:-
1. Subtract 19x-5z+31y-90 from 44y+16x-7z+34
 44y+16x-7z+34
 31y+19x-5z-90
-      -     +   +
-------------------
 13y-3x-2z+124

2. Subtract 8p-3q+7r from 9r-7q+7p
 9r-7q+7p
 7r-3q+8p
-  +    -
------------
 2r-4q-p
