TYPES of NUMBERS in MATHEMATICS: Definitions, Examples & FAQ's.

TYPES of NUMBERS in MATHS

There are different types of numbers which we learn in mathematics. They are-

Natural Number
Whole Number
Integer
Even Number
Odd Number
Prime Number
Co-prime Number
Composite Number
Rational Number
Irrational Number
Real Number
Imaginary Number
Complex Number

Now, we will discuss these numbers with their definition & examples.

1. Natural number

A natural number is a counting number which we use in our day to day life. All-natural numbers are positive. It is starting from 1(one).

The symbol of natural number is N.

Example:- 1,2,3,4,5..........upto infinity.

2. Whole Number

The whole number is also used as counting. Whole numbers are the group of 0(zero) & natural numbers.

The symbol of the whole number is W.

Example:- 0,1,2,3,4,5.......upto infinity.

3. Integer

Integers are 0(zero), all positive numbers & negative numbers without any fractional & decimal form.

The symbol of an integer is Z.

Example:- 0,-23,60,192,-278,.....etc.

4. Even Number

Even numbers are all integers which are completely divisible by 2.

Example:- 2,4,6,8,10,.........upto infinity.

5. Odd number

Odd numbers are all integers which are not completely divisible by 2.

Example:- 1,3,5,7,9,.......upto infinity.

6. Prime number

Prime numbers are those numbers which are not divisible by any number other than 1(one) & itself.

They have only two factors 1(one) & itself.

Remember 1(one) is not a prime number.

Example:- 2,3,5,7,11......so on.

7. Co-prime number

Co-prime numbers are those two numbers which have a common factor 1(one) only.

Example:- (3 & 8) both have a common factor 1.

8. Composite number

Composite numbers are those numbers which have more than two factors.

Example:- 15, 40, 21,...etc. all numbers have more than two factors.

9. Rational number

Rational numbers are all those numbers which are in fractional form. It looks like p/q where q≠0.

The symbol of a rational number is Q.

Example:- (3/1), (5/2), ...etc.

10. Irrational number

Irrational numbers are not in the form of a fraction. Means it is not expressed in the form of p/q.

The symbol of an irrational number is P.

Example:- Ï€, √5, √3, etc.

11. Real number

Real numbers are all those numbers which are present in positive, negative, fractional, decimals form.

Or it is a combined form of rational & irrational number.

The symbol of a real number is R.

Example:- 12.36, (3/5), 1456, -452, π, ...etc.

12. Imaginary number

An imaginary number is a combined form of the imaginary unit (i)& real number like (bi).

Where b is a real number & (i) is an imaginary unit.

The symbol of an imaginary number is I.

Example:- 4i, 7i, 100i, .....etc.

13. Complex number

A complex number is a combined form of real number & imaginary unit (i) & it is present in the form of (a+bi).

Where a & b stands for real number & (i) stands for imaginary unit.

The symbol of a complex number is C.

Example:- 2+5i, 3+7i, .....etc.
